When you're new to freelance writing, it's tempting to say yes to any opportunity. But not all clients are created equal. Some will support your growth and pay you well. Others... not so much. 

Here’s how to spot the good ones—and steer clear of the red flags. 

  1. They Respect Your Time and Expertise 

A good client understands that freelance writers are professionals. That means they: 

  • Pay invoices on time 
  • Communicate clearly 
  • Provide realistic deadlines 
  • Don’t expect unlimited revisions or weekend availability 

In health writing, they also recognize the value of your healthcare experience. Bonus points if they seek out nurse writers or clinical pros! 

  1. They Have a Clear Content Strategy 

You don’t need to work with Fortune 500 brands, but a quality client usually knows: 

  • Who their audience is 
  • What types of content they need 
  • How your work fits into their marketing or education goals 

This clarity makes your job easier and your writing more impactful. 

  1. They Give Helpful Feedback 

Early in your writing career, feedback is gold. Look for clients who: 

  • Provide thoughtful edits 
  • Help you understand their brand voice 
  • Encourage learning, not perfection 

A good client will help you improve—not make you feel inadequate. 

  1. They Offer Reasonable Pay (and Prompt Payment) 

This one’s huge. Great clients: 

  • Pay within 15–30 days (or sooner) 
  • Don’t ghost you when the invoice goes out 
  • Understand market rates for healthcare content 

You deserve to be paid for your time, energy, and expertise. The best clients recognize this. 

  1. They Communicate Professionally 

If a client disappears for weeks, sends confusing briefs, or changes the scope mid-project without discussion—beware. 

A good client keeps the lines of communication open. They answer questions, provide materials on time, and treat you like part of the team. 

  1. They Want a Long-Term Relationship 

You don’t have to chase new clients constantly. Some of the best freelance relationships grow over months or years. 

Watch for clients who: 

  • Invite you to write again 
  • Offer retainers 
  • Refer you to colleagues 

These folks value consistency and trust, which makes your income and your workflow more stable. 

  1. They Match Your Values 

Whether it's patient education, accessibility, or advancing health equity, many writers thrive when their clients’ values align with their own. 

You might love working with: 

  • Nonprofits focused on underserved communities 
  • Startups tackling health disparities 
  • Organizations that center trauma-informed communication 

You get to choose work that feels meaningful to you. 

Red Flags to Avoid 

Now for the flip side. Be cautious if a potential client: 

  • Asks you to write for "exposure" 
  • Wants free samples instead of paid trials 
  • Offers vague project details 
  • Doesn’t use a contract (though many reputable publications use an “assignment letter” in lieu of a full-blown contract) 
  • Takes months to pay (or dodges the topic) 

Trust your gut. If something feels off, it probably is. 

How to Attract Good Clients 

Start by presenting yourself professionally: 

  • A clear website or portfolio 
  • A polished LinkedIn profile 
  • Targeted pitches that show your value 

And remember: You are interviewing them, too. Ask about timelines, revision policies, and payment terms before accepting a gig.
